Our journey, their future

At Hope For Better Liberia, our story began with a profound understanding of the challenges faced by adolescent mothers and disadvantaged youth in post-conflict Liberia. We are dedicated to providing transformative mentorship and vital support, empowering young individuals to heal, grow, and build brighter futures. Join us in our mission to create a world where every young person can thrive.

OUR MISSION

Hope For Better Liberia was established in response to the significant challenges young mothers face in our community. Our mission is to provide immediate support through Trauma Counseling, helping these courageous individuals heal from their past experiences. Following this crucial step, we offer comprehensive vocational training that equips them with the skills necessary for self-sufficiency. Upon completing their training, these adolescent mothers are eligible for a Micro Finance Loan, which enables them to start their own businesses in areas of interest to them.

The roots of our mission

Hope For Better Liberia was inspired by the profound impact of Liberia's civil wars (1989-1997 and 1999-2003) on its most vulnerable citizens. We witnessed adolescent girls facing severe violence, abuse, and drug exposure, often resulting in them becoming "children bearing children" with little to no support. This tragic reality fueled our commitment to act.

"We stand resolute in our mission to ensure every young person is paired with a dedicated mentor who lifts them, honoring their unique identities and paving the way for vital resources, empowering relationships, and enriching opportunities."

Our Story

In 2022, Hope For Better Liberia documented a staggering 9,715 births among teens aged 14-18 across eight counties in Liberia. The alarming rise in teen pregnancies over recent years has highlighted a persistent challenge for the nation. Yet, amid this turmoil, Hope For Better Liberia has emerged as a beacon of hope, assisting numerous teenage mothers in completing vocational training and high school, with some pursuing college.

It's crucial to clarify that our data collection on teenage pregnancies was not intended to validate research on the issue or condone the circumstances surrounding it. Rather, it seeks to shed light on the experiences of those who became mothers as teenagers, often under harrowing circumstances, including abuse. These stories resonate deeply, emphasizing the need for compassion and support.

When a teen gives birth, she embarks on a profound journey into early motherhood—a transition fraught with challenges and societal stigma. These young mothers often face an uphill battle against numerous obstacles that impede their paths to personal success and fulfillment.

Through semi-structured interviews, Hope For Better Liberia unveils the powerful narratives of adult women who have triumphed over the stigma attached to teenage pregnancy. Each participant's story is unique, with diverse definitions of success and failure that reflect their individual journeys.

The focus of this initiative is not merely to highlight the issues at hand but to celebrate the resilience and determination of teen mothers as they dismantle barriers on their journeys toward success. This project aims to illuminate the effectiveness of teen parenting programs, underscoring their necessity in nurturing these young women.

Despite the continuing rise in the number of teen mothers, we must take action. We must educate the public to combat the root causes of teen abuse and early pregnancies to pave the way for a brighter future. By ensuring these young mothers have access to the support and resources they need, we can help them achieve their aspirations and redefine success on their own terms.
