The devastating 14-year civil wars in Liberia, compounded by extreme hardship and neglect, have left countless young girls in a precarious situation, making them particularly vulnerable to early pregnancies and forced marriages. Our recent study reveals a startling statistic: a staggering 67% of pregnancies in Liberia occur among adolescent girls and young women. Specifically, 38% of these pregnancies are seen in girls aged 15 to 19, while 29% affect those between 20 and 24. During the tumultuous years of civil conflict, a disheartening 55.9% of girls aged 14 to 19 reported experiencing unwanted sexual encounters, often at the hands of men or groups of men. Many of these encounters resulted in unwanted pregnancies, leaving these young girls in a harrowing situation—abandoned by the fathers, unaware of their identities, or ignored altogether.

Today, the ongoing economic struggle in Liberia continues to trap girls aged 14 to 19 in a cycle of early pregnancies with little to no accountability from the men involved. Many of these young mothers find themselves nurturing their children in isolation, some even abandoned by their families, bearing the heavy burden of parenting alone. The rise of early pregnancies among young girls is alarming, yet the support, knowledge, and resources necessary for them to lead healthy lives with their babies remain woefully insufficient.

This is where we at HOPE FOR BETTER LIBERIA step in, committed to bridging this crucial gap. Two years ago, we launched a comprehensive program for Adolescent Mothers in Liberia, offering them a second chance and a brighter future.

YOU CAN BE A PART OF THIS WORTHY CAUSE.

Hope For Better Liberia recognizes the profound interconnections between the institutionalization of children and critical domains of human rights and development. This involves our partnership with the Ministry of Gender in Liberia and aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). We are committed to delving deep into the intricate relationships that exist between adolescent mothers and pressing issues such as poverty, health, and education, illuminating how these factors intertwine to shape their lives and futures.
